In this episode of "California Travel Tips," Veronica Hill (http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com) goes on one of LA's best hikes — the trek to Big Horn Mine and Miner Vincent's Cabin in the San Gabriel Mountains. The trailhead to the cabin and mine is located at Vincent Gap on Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway), which connects metropolitan Los Angeles with the mountain village of Wrightwood. Be sure to buy a $5 adventure pass at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center before heading out, or you're likely be fined. You can also buy passes at Jensen's in Wrightwood, or Big 5 Sporting Goods stores. Plan on a half day for the moderate 4-mile round trip hike to Big Horn Mine, which follows an old wagon trail around the north slope of Mount Baden-Powell. The hike to Vincent's Cabin is roughly 2 miles round trip. Be sure to bring along snacks, plenty of water, sunscreen, and some bug spray. When you come upon the signs, you're going to want to stay right for the mine, or head downhill to the left for Vincent's Cabin. The cabin trail heads down into the valley, cutting through several types of terrain. During the hike, you'll see wildflowers, manzanita, Jeffrey pines, and even a lizard or two. There's no cell service out here, so I always carry my GPS to make sure I'm going in the right direction. You can download directions with the EveryTrail app. When you come upon these two downed trees you're going to cross the log and head down the trail. After walking nearly 25 minutes, the cabin comes into view. This little clearing was the home of prospector Charles Vincent Dougherty, a Civil War veteran who arrived in Los Angeles around 1868. On the run for murdering an Arizona claim jumper in self defense, he ended up hiding out here in San Gabriel mountains. He built a one-room cabin with shingles hewn from nearby trees, and changed his name to Charles Tom Vincent. The fireplace was crafted from locally harvested stone, and Vincent placed two bunks on each side of the fireplace. He lived here in solitude for nearly 40 years. While you're here, you can check out some of Vincent's artifacts, including old tin cans, bottle caps and a frying pan. Be sure to leave everything as you found it so others can enjoy its historical significance. In 1895, while hunting Big Horn Sheep, Vincent struck gold. Big Horn Mine produced 3,701 ounces of gold, 2,430 ounces of silver and 1,357 pounds of copper — generating roughly 100,000 dollars. Recently, the gold mine and its surrounding 277 acres was purchased by the U.S. Forest Service for $2 million. According to the L.A. Times, there are still roughly 262,000 ounces of gold in the mine — which is worth more than $430 million today. There are a few washed out areas and scrambles to get to the mine, but it's well worth the trek. The crumbling mine complex is quite impressive, with a maze of passages and tunnels totaling about 3,500 feet. If you peek inside, you can still see some of the ore cart rails, but most of the sites have been blocked off (and it's always a bad idea to enter an old mine shaft). The Bighorn Mine stamp mill is very rickety, but offers amazing views of the valley, Mount Baldy and Iron Mountain. This is a great place to stop for lunch before heading back down to Vincent Gap. We think this is one of LA's best hikes. Hope you do too! Vincent lived in this valley until the age of 83, making yearly trips into LA to watch the baseball games. He'd bring along a sack of gold each time, placing it in a safe deposit box. Vincent died in 1926, and is buried at the National Cemetery in Los Angeles. if you are in Los Angeles and are looking for a weekend road trip destination, check out this old gold rush era town called Calico, which is 2.5 hours drive towards Las Vegas, 3 minutes from 15 freeway. Driving video game: http://amzn.to/2ozEPFb GTA V drive around Los Angeles: http://amzn.to/2oyfSLn Are you driving from Las Vegas and have $8 left in your pocket? Take a break in the ghost town and see what it looks like after 100 years of being populated by 2 thousand people! Calico, California, has been restored to the look of the silver rush era when it flourished, although many original buildings were removed and replaced instead with gingerbread architecture and false facades that tourists would expect to see in a Western-themed town; Most of the restored and newly built buildings are made of wood with a simple, rustic architecture and a severely weathered appearance. Some structures still stand dating back to the town's operational years: Lil's Saloon; the town office; the former home of Lucy Lane, which is now the main museum but was originally the town's post office and courthouse; Smitty's Gallery; the general store; and Joe's Saloon. There is also a replica of the schoolhouse on the site of the original building. The one-time homes of the town's Chinese citizens exist as ruins only; only a portion of one rock wall remains of the former "family" residential area on a nearby bluff. In November 1962, Calico Ghost Town was registered as a California Historical Landmark (Landmark #782) In 2002, Calico vied with Bodie in Mono County to be recognized as the Official State Ghost Town. In 2005, a compromise was finally reached when the State Senate and State Assembly agreed to list Bodie as the Official State Gold Rush Ghost Town and Calico the Official State Silver Rush Ghost Town. Today, the park operates mine tours, gunfight stunt shows, gold panning, several restaurants, the historic, 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge Calico & Odessa Railroad, a Mystery Shack. and a number of trinket stores. It is open every day except Christmas, and requires an entrance fee. Additional fees are required for some attractions. Overnight camping is also available. Special events are held throughout the year including a Spring Festival in May, Calico Days in early October, and a Ghost Town haunt in late October. The Calico Cemetery, which holds between 96 and 130 graves, has had burials in the 20th and 21st centuries

The Right Time for an Informed Investor! CALIFORNIA GOLD & SILVER MINE ___Standard Hill Mines Company___ Is an independent claim holder in Kern County, California. Standard Hill Mines owns a group of five patented and 14 unpatented mining claims, approximately 300 + acres, about 3 miles south of Mojave, 65 miles north of Los Angeles, California. From its discovery in 1894 until underground mining finished in 1956, it is estimated that Standard Hill Mines produced approximately 150,000 oz gold and approximately 500,000 oz silver, from over 15,000 ft of horizontal drifts and stopes to a depth of 900ft down the dip of the mineralization. During open pit mining by Shell Oil Co. (Shell)/Billiton Minerals (Billiton) from 1987 to 1990 it is estimated an additional 77,500 oz of gold and 258,000 oz of silver were produced. Standard Hill Mines is a well documented, historical producer. It lies within the Mojave Mining District that has been active for almost 120 years. The property has not had any exploration activity performed on it since mining was completed in 1990 by Shell/Billiton. Historical records, as well as the exploration database created by Shell/Billiton during its exploration in the 1980s, indicate that the property still has potential for more economic mineralization. The property is currently leased to Granite Construction of California for the extraction of non-mineralized aggregate and rock. In December 2013, Tetra Tech was commissioned to complete a technical review of Standard Hill Mines property. This report is to comply with disclosure and reporting requirements set forth in National Instrument 43-101. Tetra Tech is of the opinion that the property, as well as the database, is of sufficient quality to warrant further exploration and/or evaluation. In June 2015,Mine Development Associates (MDA) made a polygonal estimate of the Standard Hill Mines property in order to guide corporate decisions regarding development of the project. MDA states the preliminary estimated tonnage, grade and ounces for the Standard Hill Mines area are twelve million tonnes grading 0.02oz Au/T and 0.15oz Ag/T for a total of 240,000oz of gold and 1,800,000oz of silver. Based on MDA’s knowledge of Standard Hill Mines data, there is some Indicated material that would be defined, possibly even some Measured and the rest would be Inferred.
